World War I was a very bloody war that lasted from 1914-1919. There were 10 million soldier killed and 20 million wounded. WWI all started when Austria's Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated in June of 1914. They were killed in Bosnia by a Serb Nationalist. This was viewed as a great excuse to attack the Austria-Hungary. There were two powers during WWI; Allied force: France, United Kingdom and Russia, and the Central party: Germany and Austria-Hungary. Germany knew they couldn't attack Russia so they set up the Schlieffen Plan. The plan was when Germany decided to attack France by going though neutral Belgium. At the time Britain had a treaty with Belgium, when Germany attacked Belgium, Britain joined the war. At the same time France had their plan and attacked Germany. As the war progress, soldier dug trenches and these becomes the home and fighter area for soldiers of the war for the next four years. Leaving the trenches was very dangerous and the only to overtake the enemy was to go into the "No man land". Crossing meant getting killed by machine guns and grenades. As the war went on the Allies number got low. US joined the war after a couple of incident with Germany. US declared war on Germany. When the US joined the war, the Allied had more advantages and were on their way to winning the war. As the war went on for one year, Germany was retreating. Germany finally retreated and the Allies won the war. Germany was punished as the result of the war. The treaty of Versailles was issued. The treaty end the war, but it also set the stage for World War II, as the treaty harshly punished Germany for the start of the war.
